Good ice is the difference between a drink that holds its shape and one that waters down while you talk. A sphere has less surface touching the liquid than a handful of cubes, so it gives up its cold slowly and the last mouthful tastes much like the first.

Freezer trays rarely get there. Household ice freezes from the outside in, trapping air and minerals in the middle, which is why a tray cube comes out cloudy and tastes faintly of whatever else is in the freezer. This machine freezes in a controlled cycle instead, and the balls come out clear and solid, roughly an hour and a half at a time, three to a batch.

It is built to sit out rather than be put away. Food grade stainless steel, with a tinted drawer you can see the ice through, so you know what you have without opening anything. The panel is one black glass strip with a five step progress reading, and indicators tell you when the tank needs water and when the bin is full.

Fill it, press start, and leave it. When it needs rinsing through, the cleaning cycle does it on its own.
